LSART was activated for to assist affected Parishes for Hurricane Ike. Most Parishes did handle their own needs and did not have to turn to the State for help.

LSART is in need for funds to provide horse and cattle hay to
animals affected by Ike and Gustav.
The Walter J Ernst Foundation has already donated $10,000 to the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry for cattle hay drops.  Additional funding is needed for equine hay.

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 14, 1:00 PM

Flooding in coastal parishes more severe than after Hurricane Rita.  However, animal issues and search & rescue remain under the control of parish animal control in all instances.  Calcasieu Parish has activated existing MOUs with IFAW and Noah's Wish for Search and Rescue and Sheltering, respectively.
There is currently no need for outside help or groups other than the activated groups via MOU with individual parishes.
There is a small CTN shelter in Shreveport and there are some self-evacuator shelters as outlined below.
LSART Equine District Rep, Dr. Harry Kleinman, is assisting Animal Control in Calcasieu.

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 12, 11:00 AM

CTN pet shelter is open at Bossier animal control. Liz Walker manager; Renee Poirrier co-manager.  The shelter is housing 20 dogs, 5 cats, 5 exotics. Intake went on until 4:30 am.  The Shelter is being staffed with the help of State Prisoners from Forcht Wade Correctional.

LSART now is managing self-evacuator shelters in Monroe Shreveport and Alexandria.

IFAW is once again in Calcasieu assisting Lake Charles and  Noah's Wish team is on standby in case we need outside help at the shelters.

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 12, 5:00 AM


There is a recommended evacuation notice for Calcasieu Parish and a mandatory notice for Cameron Parish in effect.  Grand Isle and other coastal parishes are issuing partial evacuation orders.  Most are sheltering within their parishes and Parish Animal Control remain in charge of animal issues associated with Ike.


LSART has set up a Critical Transport Needs pet shelter at Bossier City Animal Control.
